2012 Peugeot 208 revealed, coming to 2012 Australian International Motor Show

Peugeot has revealed the all-new Peugeot 208 in Europe. The new model will be the successor to the current Peugeot 207 small car.

The Peugeot 208 will be lighter and more fuel efficient than the 207. It’s also said to be engineered as a spiritual successor to the original Peugeot 205, providing what the French brand describes as the “most ambitious specification overhaul” yet.

One of the main focuses on the new model is its lightweight construction. In base model three-door form, the little Pug weighs just 975kg, making it not only around 200kg lighter than the 207, but also one of the lightest small cars around – even the MINI Cooper weighs more (1070kg).

Peugeot has been able to achieve this by reducing some of the car’s external dimensions. The 208 is 70mm shorter and 10mm lower than the 207, while the wheelbase remains the same length at 2540mm.

Even though the new model will be slightly smaller on the outside, the 208 will offer more interior room featuring a 285-litre boot (up 15 litres) and more passenger space. Peugeot is also promising an improved interior layout and higher quality, with a focus on being user-friendly.

The Peugeot 208, in Europe at least, will come with fuel-efficient 1.0- and 1.2-litre VTi petrol engines, replacing the 207s 1.4- and 1.6-litre units. Official power figures are yet to be revealed but we can expect outputs to range between 56kW and 75kW of power.

As for the local line-up, the Peugeot 208 is set to replace the 207. Peugeot Australia is still finalising pricing and specifications but the company says it plans to reveal the production version in Sydney at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in October.
